Chair Sid

Description

Powder coating on the metal frame provides durability and creates a long-lasting finish. The frame of the Sid chair is powder-coated in a dedicated chamber, which offers additional protection from adverse weather conditions, making the Sid chair ideal for both indoor use and outdoor terraces or summer cafes.

One of the key features of this piece is its versatility: it can serve as a dining chair in a dining set, or a comfortable work chair in your home office. The backrest offers the necessary support for the lower lumbar and thoracolumbar regions, allowing you to sit comfortably for extended periods of time. This makes the chair an optimal solution regardless of its use, whether in a cafe, restaurant, workspace, or dining area.

Additionally, the armrests on the Sid chair are equipped with soft "gloves," giving a feeling of warmth and comfort when you touch them. The slightly curved armrest with a gentle slope along its length creates an ergonomic groove, mirroring the natural shape of a person's forearm when seated. The Sid chair can easily be slid under a table thanks to its shortened, slightly downward-pointing armrests, allowing you to save space in smaller areas. Under certain table models with thinner tabletops, the chair can be fully tucked in. Despite its compact design, the Sid chair is equally comfortable for people of various builds.

The Sid chair is a piece inspired by one of the main characters from the well-known animated film "Ice Age"—the sloth named Sid. The design concept of this item was shaped during the ergonomic development of the chair. While sketching the armrest in relation to the backrest, Sergei Gravchikov noticed how closely the shape resembled the familiar character. This observation led to the idea of further developing this theme and focusing on it.

The love for contrasts and opposites is a common theme in UNIKA products, and the Sid chair is no exception. The thin and delicate metal legs, often associated with coldness and aloofness, contrast with the soft and plush form of the seat, adding warmth and comfort to the design.

The interpretation of the character's personality and his physical features are expressed in recognizable elements. The shape of the armrests flowing into the backrest and the tapered supports directly reference the character's image, while the soft "gloves" enhance it, giving it a friendly and slightly naive demeanor, inviting everyone to take a cozy break from the daily hustle and bustle.

Story of creation
Chair Sid

The Sid chair is the first item from UNIKA featuring a one-piece metal frame.

However, the first prototype of the Sid chair was made of wood, which added a slight sense of bulkiness and didn't allow the intended design to come through. The decision was made to experiment with new materials and technology in the creation of this piece. That's when the idea of using a metal frame emerged, allowing us to achieve another goal set for the new year—developing furniture for outdoor spaces.

During subsequent iterations of prototyping, it became clear that using metal could enhance the intended design and allow the creation of elements that were difficult to achieve when working with wood.

Why Sid? A question our designers were often asked during the production of the piece. The answer is quite straightforward:

The concept for the item was formed right from the earliest stage of development. We wanted to continue creating pieces that would be adaptable to different spaces, in terms of both size and functionality. While most of our furniture is intended for interior use, the idea for this new piece was different—the main inspiration lives in the wild, so the item needed to follow this logic and be suitable for outdoor environments as well. Even during sketching, the design started to take on increasingly recognizable features reminiscent of a familiar character. Thus, even before the item came into being, its name was already predetermined.

The Sid chair was conceived as a utilitarian piece: simple, clean, and ergonomic. The resemblance to the cartoon character gave it recognizable traits while simultaneously endowing it with unique features. Sid, just like the character, can take on different personalities depending on the finish: smooth fabrics lend it an air of formality and structure, while bouclé adds playfulness and friendliness to the piece.
